Silves sits 11kms from the coast and was once a medieval town and the ancient capital of the Algarve. It is famous for having the most well preserved castle of the Algarve. The Moors ruled Portugal for 433 years from the 8th century and you can still see evidence of the Arabic architecture today. The old town is laced with beautiful cobbled street that are lined with artisan shops, cafes, bars and alfresco dining. Within the municpality of Silves, there is a quaint fishing village called Armação de Pêra. The beach there is exceptional with 5kms of sand on one half of the beach and towering cliffs on the other side.
