Isle sur la Sorgue villa holidays, Provence Holiday rentals - villa & holiday homes to rent in Isle sur la Sorgue
L’Isle sur la Sorgue is another of Provence's gems and is famed for its waterways. The village gets its name from once being an island in the wetlands of the river Sorgue that surrounds the town. After the wetlands were drained by creating a criss-cross of canals, the town became known as the "Venice of the region". Sitting between Avignon and Gordes, Isle sur la Sorgue was originally a crayfishing town that became a medieval industrial powerhouse with the river Sorgue powering the flour mills from as early as the 12th century - the huge water wheels can still be seen along the river banks.
These days, Isle sur la Sorgue is famous for its waterside cafes and restaurants, as well as its markets and many antiques shops - there are over 300 antique dealers and second hand shops! For eating out, there is nothing better than sitting at a riverside restaurant and trying out the exceptional Provençal cuisine characterised by garlic, olive oil, tomato sauce and aromatic herbs. And then there are the local wines to sample and there really is a wide selection! In fact, one of the main tourist attractions is wine tasting at the local vineyards.
