Gallipoli is a beautiful coastal city looking on to the Ionian sea on the Salentina peninsula in southern Italy.
The historic and fortified old town sits on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a 17th century bridge and is laced with narrow cobbled streets lined by pretty boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants. As well as the many Baroque churches and aristocratic palazzi, there is a seafront promenade that hugs the walled city. This is popular place for the evening "passeggiata" before heading to one of the excellent seafood restaurants for some alfresco dining.
